Paul Merson believes Liverpool are capable of winning the league but admits they have an unenviable task ahead of them.
What did he say?
Liverpool and Manchester City have both continued where they left off last season and it is likely to be another closely fought title race this time around, with only two points dropped from the total eight games they have played.
The Reds are currently on a club-record winning run, beating Norwich, Southampton, Arsenal and Burnley to continue their form from 2018/19, and despite the addition of only one senior player they look well-placed to mount another title push.
Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson is in awe of Jurgen Klopp’s side, and believes they would be winning the league in any other era if Man City weren’t so good.
Speaking on Sky Sports, as reported by the Daily Star, he said: “They’ve just won their 13th straight match and made a trip to Burnley look easy.
“People talk about timing. At several points in Premier League history Liverpool would have won it easily, but there is a Manchester City side that are as phenomenal as they are.
“All Liverpool can do is keep doing what they’re doing, keep on winning, worry about themselves and make sure they keep City honest.
“If that fails, all you can do is hold your hands up.”
Liverpool’s 97 Premier League points in 2018/19 was the third-highest tally achieved in the history of the competition, bettered only by the Man City team of last season and the one before, which shows Merson is correct in his assessment.
Beating the competition
Klopp’s team lost out on the title by just a point last term, and it would be easy to point to games drawn against teams like Leicester City or West Ham, but their failure to win the league also comes down to disappointing results against their title rivals Man City.
The matches against the Citizens at Anfield and the Etihad were not good enough from the Reds’ perspective, and they will know they need to pick up more than the one point they got against them during the previous campaign.

Liverpool have proved time and again that they’re too much for most Premier League sides – only losing one game last season – and using that as evidence it is realistic to assume there could be little separating the two sides once again.
Therefore, they will need to overcome Man City in at least one game this term, and if they can do that they may have the advantage in the Premier League title race.
