Former England and Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand is the latest top sporting figure to join the Premier League’s initiative aimed at inspiring primary school children.As a player, Ferdinand led the Red Devils to the 2008 Champions League trophy, edging Chelsea in the Moscow final that John Terry famously slipped in at a point when he could have ended the penalty shoot-out in the Blues’ favour.Now the former central defender with a range of honours to his name is joining a movement led by the Premier League that looks to motivate children in a range of activities, from school subjects like maths and English to teamwork and sport.
PL Primary Stars looks to bring to life challenging topics such as resilience, diversity and self-esteem through personal insights from children and top figures from around the sporting world.
Ferdinand’s involvement comes as part of the Writing Stars program, where he will judge a poetry competition centred on the theme of diversity alongside singer and songwriter Olly Murs, poet Joseph Coelho and Waterstones Childrens’ Laureate Lauren Child.
